Today we’re going to discuss why a HP printer wouldn’t print and how to solve it. But, before we begin, just to double-check with you. In case you’re having issues exclusively with the black ink cartridge, then jump over to our last week’s guide under this link: HP Printer not printing black ink.
Now, since we have that out of our way let’s focus on the today’s topic and start of with the basics.
Is your printer connected to your computer properly?
The first step in to solving the issue would be to check the cables. In order for your HP Printer to print, you need to have it connected to a power outlet so that you can turn it on, and connect it to your computer so that your drivers can see the printer and send it print jobs over the line or via Wi-Fi.
So, your printer should have two cables, one connected to the outlet and another to your computer. Please do check that first, and after that we can go to the next step.
Do you have the right drivers installed?
Each printer comes with their own set of HP Printer Drivers, usually located on a CD which came with the device. In case you lost that CD and can’t install the printer drivers from it, you can download them through this link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers. Just type in your model name and download the drivers, install them afterwards and double-check if your printer is not printing.
If your HP printer is still not printing, then let’s go over to the next step.
HP printer not connecting to WiFi
If you’re one of those users who like to have cloud printing enabled, and need their printer connected to their WiFi network, but you stumbled on some issues and your HP printer won’t connect to your WIFi, then the only proper solution to the problem is to go through HP’s official guide. Did you install the ink cartridges correctly?
HP Ink Cartridges either came with your device or you have to purchase them separately, depending on where you’ve got the machine. Each cartridge needs to be installed separately in to your machine, but before you do that, you need to remove the protective plastic tape which is located on the ink cartridge.
Be sure that each and every ink cartridge installed in your printer has that little piece of plastic tape removed, since the same tape is obstructing the ink flow from the ink cartridge in to your printer and, thus, your HP Printer doesn’t print.
Is your device calibrated?
Some users think that their device needs to be calibrated only once, but that’s not true. Every time you install a fresh pack of ink cartridges, regardless if it’s just one color or all four of them, you need to calibrate the printer. The reason behind it is that although you put a fresh black ink cartridge in to the device, it doesn’t read it and, thus, the HP Printer won’t print. To calibrate your device, find the HP Photosmart Toolbox or the Service this device tools on your machine, within the printer’s software.
Once you’re there, you should see one out of these three options: Calibrate the device or Clean The Print Cartridges or Align the printer. Click one of them, doesn’t matter which one, and the printer will calibrate itself.
Did you try cleaning your printheads?
If you’re owning an older printer, then there is a huge chance that the printheads need a cleanup. If you’re not familiar with the term, you can check it out here: What are printer printheads.
It’s nothing complicated though, so don’t be scared. You just need a cleaning solution like this one paired with a lint-free cloth or, if you don’t have that, a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol will also do the job.
Take out all the cartridges and start cleaning the contacts on both of them, once you’re done leave them ut to dry. Here are some photos to explain the process a bit better:
None of the above helped, what now?
I wouldn’t recommend opening up the device and tinkering with the internals further then the above mentioned printhead cleaning, especially if you’re not familiar with the process. So, the best solution would be to find a local print repair service or call HP Customer Support to guide you through the process.
